lol @ the closing thoughts. also patrick please publish those emails. anyway thank you for this interview. i worked for a few years on hiring from the engineering side and am deeply familiar with both of your works, so this whole thing was a real treat. i'm inclined to agree with your "centrist" pov vincent. modern coding interviews, despite their ample flaws, are still much more effective work sample tests than the default interview in just about any other industry, or the median alternative in tech. it's baffling the number of engineers who think coding interviews are bad, but replacing them with eg "tell me about a project you've worked on" will yield better signal. it's also a symptom of a core problem with engineering hiring: hiring is a virtual org, 50% owned by recruiting and 20% owned by engineering. it isn't any engineer's full-time job, so it isn't a problem that receives the kind of top-idea-in-your-mind attention that other engineering problems do. within a few weeks of working on hiring full time i was having better insights into the problem (including eventually: project discussions are ~indistinguishable from noise when controlling for resume) than i'd had in the previous five years of being a hiring manager/interviewer at a faang. stockfighter was incredible and it's telling that the googles of the world have not even attempted to build something of that quality as an experiment. (or that they didn't build or at least buy coderpad themselves!) it's much more a problem of "where would this fall on the org chart" than "we have made a considered determination that this is not a worthwhile investment of resources", particularly when they're already spending a small country's GDP worth of resources on hiring.

This is a great interview. I loved the discussion of Patrick's motivations for going to Japan and the epistemology of those motivations. Also loved hearing about Starfighter and why they wound it down. I used to work at a startup that was in a similar space to Starfighter/Triplebyte/etc. and a lot of the same forces were at play. Coincidentally, that startup's IP was acquired by CoderPad.

"As someone else said, this is indeed a love letter to BART. I live in East Bay and work in downtown San Francisco and couldn't have without BART. For 25 years I commute on BART. I'm an advocate for public transit and believe BART is an exceptional system. People in the Bay Area are fortunate to have it but too often take it for granted.

Glad the driver didn't hassle you more than he did about the cam retrieval in the end. I was thinking exactly how he is going to get the cam now when it pulled into that Antioch transfer train station. I'm sure you had it all worked out in your head, but then the driver had to hassle you. Thanks for the effort in making the video to share, and also the various interviews.

I just recently moved to the bay area, and am consistently startled by just how useful BART is, especially when driving would put you through a tollbooth. This is an INCREDIBLE look into what makes this subway so unique. Beautiful footage, well-spoken interviews, honestly worth a watch even if you're not a huge fan of subways and trains

This guy rules lmao. Far too many climbing gym brunch rats running around talking about cheese and shit-not enough Anton Newcombe types terrorizing the neighborhood bartenders. If I may though, the editing is atrocious. In the span of about two minutes during that outdoor interview, the music shifts from royalty free Curb to tense, suspenseful, playful, serious. Like, stick to one, you clearly wanted to make him look dumb when he fumbled on his words with that hilariously loud and poorly mixed Curb stuff. Then you have these breaks where you think you’re owning him and it’s corny as hell, man. It seems a bit cowardly to go after him in post just because you have minimal charisma and have these awkward and uppity little laughs at the end of supposed checkmate questions. Is that how you are in real life? I’d rather get hit with a chair than stand anywhere near you. “You seem to be quite intelligent…actually.” You fully lost me and any genuine viewer there. Your condescending documentary style made a bad neighborhood drunk seem far less lame in comparison. Perhaps, go watch Dig! and Streetwise and learn to be a fly on the wall. Win their favor, get them to let you follow them around and catch them in the act-not be some uppity little river goblin out to snipe a guy that has zero chance of winning anyhow.
